How to avoid buying a haunted house...

There are some telltale signs that a new home is haunted by some commonly overlooked details. Check to see if the home you’re considering has taken steps to ensure your health and comfort, and to prevent chills running down your spine every time you open your energy bill.

  • Chilly Rooms

One of the ways to tell if you’re in a haunted house is a distinct chill in the air. Ghostly air leaks suck energy out of the room creating drafts and cold spots. Mandalay homes are sealed tight using spray foam insulation and a special AeroBarrier sealing process so you will never have chilly drafts. And our ventilation systems are precisely balanced so that every room in the house is at a consistent temperature.

  • Bumps in the night

Another hallmark of a haunted house are startling bumps in the night.  This could be a “noisy ghost” or more likely, your HVAC kicking on over and over in the middle of the night. There are no bumps in the night with a Mandalay home. Because our homes stay at a comfortable temperature longer the HAVC system does not need to come on as much, or can run at a lower speed so that you barely know it is on at all. As an added benefit, our spray foam insulation also acts as an acoustic barrier blocking outside noises and making Mandalay homes more comfortable and quieter

  • Ghoulish Smells

If something smells a bit funky in your brand new home it could be a foul smelling ghoul leaking in a dark corner. Or it could be ghastly VOC gases emitting from the paints, adhesives, and materials used to build your new home. Mandalay Homes is one of the most awarded builders in the nation for indoor air quality. All of our homes are EPA Indoor Air Plus certified. We use only low/no VOC building materials and include a fresh air exchange system in every home. Our iON Plus Series homes also feature an additional whole-house charge ion air purification system that actively neutralizes odors.

  • Flickering Lights

Flickering CFLs, inefficient lighting, and bulbs frequently burning out are another sure sign your home has energy wasting Ghosts. Mandalay Homes use long lasting low energy LED lighting. LED lights are more resistant to spiritual shenanigans so they don’t get as hot and you won’t have to change light bulbs as often.

Who are you gonna call? Ghostbusters?

There’s no need to call Ghostbusters or Tangina Barrons. You can avoid buying a haunted house by asking if the home is ZERH Certificated, Energy Star Certified, and Indoor AirPLUS certified. These labels are tightly controlled by the US Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to help ensure you are getting the best built, healthiest, and more energy efficient home possible.
